+ INTERVIEW THE MANAGER

Q: It’s so clean in side the shop. You must’ve been cleaning so often, right?
A: We are trying to clean whenever we have time.
But our goal is further more !!
Q: Can you please tell us about your 4 kinds of curry?

A: We make them completely separately. Spices and ingredients are all different. They all made by “TOKYO CURRY BANCHO (=Tokyo Curry Gang Leader)” (a unit of 4 men known by their food event and their books) and eminent producer gave them a “go” sign after tasting them. It is special because each curry pastes are designed to match each different kinds of meat. And we as Lab are creating our original curry as well. So far intervals are every season but we are aiming to have every month.

Q: What kind of customers is majority for a lunch time?

A: Weekdays we have a lot of office workers and ladies. Gents are 40%, Ladies 60% maybe.
For weekends, are mainly those visitors of Tokyo Tower.

Q: Why did you choose this location?
A: Our concept is to make “Japanese” curry and we imaged that we transmit with Tokyo Tower’s electric wave.

Q: What is your main concern?
A: We’re trying to provide a service understanding customers’ feelings as much as possible.

Q: What kind customers coming in lunch hour?
A: For lunch time, mostly office workers on weekdays and families on weekends, for dinner time a lot of couples as well.

Q: When is a peak time for lunch?
A: That is a number we put when we develop the menu.
Some numbers is not in order because some menus weren’t chose for final menu.

Q: I know everything is nice here but can you tell me which one is the best if you have to choose?  Which one is most popular?
A: A: Most popular one for customers is “Almond Chicken” and “ Onion Chicken” and among staffs “Spicy Pork” is the best one.

Q: Are there any link between the picture on the monitor in front of us and the curry?
A: A: It’s just a part of interior.

Q: These place mat and paper napkin are so cute. Some people may think to bring them home. Are they designed by graphic designer?
A: They are designed by Mr. Mizuno from Good Design Company. Mr. Koyama from “Tokyo Curry Gang Leader” and Mr. Katayama from “Wonder Wall” joined the final decision.
Some people really bring the place mat home. Menu and other items are not to bring home but so cute that some people does. (From reporter : don’t bring their item home!!)

Q: Interior color is basically white. Is this because you image “Laboratory”?
A: We use stainless steel for interior because of that but I think the color is just chosen by Mr. Katayama from “Wonder Wall”

Q: Any message to customers?
A: We are just started. We would like to learn step by step from customers.
We are waiting for you!

+ LUNCH MENU

   They don’t have lunch menu
Basic 4 kinds and Special menu developed by lab itself.
You can choose rice amount from “Big” “Normal” “ Small” and won’t affect the price so normally gentleman will request “Big”. They told me that “Big” is about 3-4 bowl. I ask for “Small” but that is quite similar to normal for regular shop. You can make them “To-Go” as well..

  1. TCL011 : Onion Chicken Curry --- 1,000 yen
I ordered when I first visited them. They make onion to golden color so that can taste rich and even slightly sweet. It’s not just a curry paste but have enough presence to be single dish. Chicken becomes tender enough to separate with spoon. It’ was quite heavy dish.

  2. Almond chicken curryTCL001 : Almond Chicken Curry --- 1,000 yen ( right photo )
I tried when I visited for second time. They are mild and sweet. Maybe because of almond? But it’s quite spicy. I imagine ladies and kids may like it. I worried a bit about their calories but finish them all! I like it!! Compare to Onion Chicken Curry, light taste and the color lighter as well. Have 2 big pieces of chicken.

  3. TCL005 : Double Minced Meat Curry --- 1,100 yen
A curry with roughly minced beef and pork with special spices.

  4. TCL009 : Spicy Pork Curry --- 1,200 yen
A curry with tender pork back ribs with dry coriander and selected spices.

Last 2 is curry from Lab. For this summer they are :

  1. Eggplant and Minced Meat Curry / Summer special --- 1,200 yen
  2. Summer Vegetable Curry / Summer special --- 1,200 yen

You can combine 2 kinds of curry as follows…

  1. Almond Chicken Curry + Double Minced Meat Curry --- 1,350 yen
  2. Almond Chicken Curry + Spicy Pork Curry --- 1,400 yen
  3. Almond Chicken Curry + Onion Chicken Curry --- 1,300 yen
  4. Double Minced Meat Curry + Spicy Pork Curry --- 1,450 yen
  5. Double Minced Meat Curry + Onion Chicken Curry --- 1,350 yen
  6. Spicy Pork Curry + Onion Chicken Curry --- 1,400 yen
I felt so special about their Lassi they give us in a small glass. You can put it in your curry or you can drink. They’ll make curry even milder. I recommend to kids.

+ ATMOSPHERE

Located in Tokyo Tower where a lot of families and tourist visit. Go up to 2nd floor to the right, using glass wall and using white color for their interior maybe because they are imaging “Laboratory”. They’re clean and chic. Main producer Mr. Koyama, a broadcast writer and eminent creator joined to make attractive restaurant including their original table ware, place mat, spoon and glass. Its funny to see the gap between this chic place and the local taste Tokyo Tower. (Just for info, the next door is “Taiyoro” a Chinese buffet)

place matThere is white O shape counter table in the center of the shop, which is shiny clean. All 30 seats are at counter so you won’t feel lonely when you visit alone. When I visit, most of customers were 1-2people party or by family.

After you take your seat, you’ll realize eye-catching place mat in front of you layout of information about curry which is quite cute!
I was thinking to bring it home and laminate to be able to use as home use place mat!!
paper napkinThere is a monitor in front of you. It shows you not a TV program but a artistic video like “a liquid soap like thing is flowing on a concrete road” all the time. This was a bit strange for me. Why this video in curry shop?
Anyway take a careful look at even a paper napkin. They make it a comment form!! This is really good idea!! Its eco and people will always take a look of it !!

You can enjoy a symbolic view of Tokyo Tower and curry as well
And of course don’t forget to stop by our Azabu Interior show room after that!!

You can be linked to more photos! (Click each title )
1. Exterior of Curry Lab.-2 / 2 Video on the monitor
3 Books displayed inside / 4 Glass covered area for “To-GO”
5 Curry Lab. Original item / 6 customer enjoying meal.
