* Home Appliances Recycling law *
(Law for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances)

• The purpose of this law is to regulate the amount of garbage to protect our environment. Consumers, retailers, importers and manufacturers must cooperate to reduce the waste.
  
• Consumers can no longer ask municipals to pick up the unwanted home electric appliances like TVs, air conditioners, refrigerator, washing machines must be recycled. Instead, consumers must ask retailers to pick up such items and must pay recycling fee as well as transportation fee. Then the retailers will transport the items to the manufacturers. Manufacturers have to recycle certain percentage of the collected items. Such fee varies according to the manufacturers. Average fee for the recycling fee including transportation fee is around 5,000 yen for a TV, 6,600 yen for a refrigerator. Moreover, customers have to stay home whole day waiting for the recycling pick up. For more information please see the government documents.
  
• Furniture does not apply to this law, but still disposal is time consuming and costly. Municipal garbage disposal may need 2 weeks or more advance booking.

Changing environment of TV

• Now we can see both analog and digital TV programs in Japan. But from July 24, 2011, all TV programs will be broadcast in digital. That means all conventional analog TV will not be usable after 2011.
  
• Buying analog TV now is not a good choice, because current analog TV will not support digital programs. If you buy such TV, you fill not be find someone to give away, even for free, because disposal is not free. It is said that the prices of digital TVs will go down in future, but now it is still very expensive.
